Your generous financial support helped us:

Complete eight projects for local area shelters, benefitting more than 2,110 families and individuals. Your donations helped us provide more than $600,000 in savings to the shelters—funds that they could instead use on food, utilities, childcare, counseling, training and education for residents.

Break ground on Community Lodgings with Pulte Homes, a 5,752 s.f. project currently valued at $900,000. Upon completion, 40 homeless families will be off the streets and out of the shelters, with a beautiful new place to call to home by early 2013.

Give away 200 tickets and goody bags to families for an unforgettable night at the Potomac Nationals baseball game—for many, the first baseball they’d ever attended … and for one teenage boy, the opportunity to throw out the first pitch!

Distribute thousands of work and school clothes and accessories to hundreds of women and children from local shelters at the Women Giving Back (WGB) Store.

Donate more than 200 gift cards remaining from the 11th Annual HomeAid Gala & Auction to local shelters, which passed them along to families during the holiday season.

Make a $1,000 donation to Northern Virginia Family Service in appreciation for all the work they do.

Provide sponsorship support to the Reston Association’s Reston Kid’s Triathlon—a fun day of exercise and spirit for many of our communities’ underprivileged children.

Recruit seven interns to work at HomeAid and provide invaluable support to our operations.

After a combined total of 16 years of service to the HomeAid Northern Virginia Board of Directors, Charlie Browning, former vice president of Greater Washington Publishing and a HANV Board member for eight years; Lee Fifer, partner, McGuire Woods LLP, Board member for five years; and Steve Fritz, president, Ryland Homes, Board member for three years, are resigning.

Browning, one of HomeAid’s longest-serving Board members, is resigning due to he and his wife’s upcoming relocation to Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

In recognizing Browning for his service, former HANV President and Board Member Bill Berry said, “Charlie, your resignation and retirement brings mixed emotions to me. I have personally witnessed your leadership to our industry for many years—whether it was for the New Homes Guide, Finest for Family Living Awards, The Washington Post, or your service to HomeAid, you have always given freely of your time and extraordinary talents. I can’t say I am happy about your departure from our industry, and I know that I will miss seeing you. I wish you and yours all the best in the future.”

Fifer is also resigning due to his upcoming retirement from McGuire Woods LLP at the end of December.

“I enjoyed participating with the solution-oriented, practical and very warmhearted members of the board,” Fifer said, “who rarely encountered a situation to which they could not respond in a meaningful way to make things better. I enjoyed the non-hesitating generosity of time, talent and money, and I enjoyed the shared commitment to make an actual and substantial difference for those who are helped. All of this was efficiently and effectively supported by [Executive Director] Christy Eaton. It has been quite rewarding for me.”

Fritz has also found his three years with the HANV Board very satisfying, adding, “I believe strongly in HomeAid’s mission, and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve on its board. It was a great experience to serve with so many like-minded colleagues, and I’m so proud of the work we’ve been able to accomplish over the last several years. I look forward to continuing to watch HomeAid help thousands of people regain their footing in Northern Virginia.”

Fischer enjoyed his time with HANV immensely, particularly enjoying the on-site visits to shelter projects. “Seeing what HomeAid is doing in person really helped shows the tangible results,” he said. “I’m surprised at how quickly my time at HomeAid has passed, and I’m going to miss it here a lot.”

Women Giving Back (WGB)—a HomeAid Northern Virginia program that helps transitionally homeless women get back on their feet with free clothes and accessories suitable for re-entering the workplace—has had another incredible year, with huge support from the HomeAid community that enabled volunteers to distribute thousands of items to hundreds of women and children from shelters in Northern Virginia.

WGB also gained more attention and donations from members of the Northern Virginia Builders Industry Association (NVBIA), as NVBIA President Mike Gorman made a concerted, and very successful, effort to encourage its members to also support WGB with school supplies, Halloween costumes and toy drive campaigns, as well as give cash donations.

“One of my favorite images from this summer,” Gorman said, “was the sight of Mike Scheurer, HomeAid’s president, heading out after the NVBIA/HomeAid crab feast with enough donated school supplies to fill an SUV.”

In addition to the school supplies, costumes and toys, WGB collected loads of clothing and accessories, but it all needs to be sorted before it can be put out on the shelves.

In order to ensure another successful year for WGB, please consider having your organization host a private “sort party!”

The parties can be scheduled at any time during the day or night, except during the second week of the month. Food and refreshments can be made available, and to maximize the fun and make a sufficient “dent” in the items to be sorted, a minimum of five people is recommended. Volunteers should plan on spending at least three hours.

For more information or to schedule a sorting party, e-mail womengivingback@gmail.com. You’ll be one step closer to being part of a program that has distributed more than 450,000 items of clothing to 10,000 women and children from 100+ shelters in Northern Virginia since its founding in 2007.

WGB also collected enough toys to fill two enormous bins at HomeAid Northern Virginia’s Gala in November, and the toys will be distributed to shoppers during WGB’s December Store. This marks the fifth year WGB has decorated and organized a “Santa’s Workshop” for shoppers’ children.

HomeAid Northern Virginia is seeking a Builder Captain for a small renovation project for Fauquier Family Shelter near Warrenton. The townhome, which is part of Fauquier Family Shelter’s transitional housing program, needs a few improvements before a resident family can move in.

As with most projects, the Builder Captain will provide project leadership; help organize in-kind donation assistance from trade partners; and leverage their assets, knowledge and contacts to reduce the cost of the renovation and oversee the project from start to finish. The project has been pre-screened by HomeAid Northern Virginia’s Board of Directors, and the scope of work and project expectations are well documented.

For more information about this project, or if you’re interested in serving as a Builder Captain for future projects, please contact Christy Eaton, HomeAid Northern Virginia executive director, at 571.283.6320. More information is also available online.

“There’s so much need in the communities in which we live and work. It’s an honor to be able to help our region’s non-profits and the families that they so ably serve.”
~ Mark Kirchmeyer, vice president, Lincoln Property Company

“Pulte has always been very active in its charitable giving, and we like giving back to the community in a way that ties in with the building industry. HomeAid is a great way to do that. We’re always glad to take part.”
~ John Halak, vice president of construction operations, Pulte Homes

“We want to focus our donations directly to non-profits because we believe they make better use of the funds. After we learned more about HomeAid and heard about this project, it was easy for us to say, ‘Yes.’ We’re a local builder, we all live in the community, and we like to give back.”
~ Craig Havenner, president, The Christopher Companies

“We like to work with HomeAid because we feel it’s an obligation as good corporate citizens, and to be a part of all the good work that HomeAid does. But most of all, it’s because our people get energized by it. As an organization, from the top down, we all feel that we get as much as we give, and it gives all of us a huge energy boost. It’s exciting to know that we’re making such a big difference to so many.”
~ Pete Thompson, group president, for K. Hovnanian Homes
