Building Hope – May 2015

HomeAid’s Biggest Project of the Year Begins Next Week
On Friday, May 15 at 2:00 p.m., HomeAid and Stanley Martin Homes will break ground on the biggest project of the year—a new, 5,000 square foot residential facility for Youth For Tomorrow (YFT) at 11835 Hazel Circle Drive in Bristow, Va. The new home will allow YFT to expand on-campus residential services for up to 36 more girls every year, providing a safe and secure housing environment for pregnant teens or young mothers, homeless and runaway youth, and survivors of sex trafficking. The project, with a retail value of $750,000, has drawn commitments from 87 trade partners, who will save YFT 69 percent of the total project cost through donated labor and materials. The savings will allow YFT to invest more money in the programs and services that will make a lasting difference in the lives of the young people in its care.
“It means a great deal to Stanley Martin Homes to support HomeAid as a Builder Captain for the YFT project,” said Mike Cleary, corporate vice president of purchasing and quality. “Giving back to the communities in which we build is part of our company’s social fabric. This project is unique due to the amount of involvement by Stanley Martin Home’s YFT Project Team, and the support of our trade partners (manufacturers, distributors and subcontractors). The collaboration, support, and commitment of all involved have provided the momentum to exceed our expectations in obtaining material and labor donations. It is an honor to work with so many who volunteer, team together, share resources, and provide financial support to this worthy community cause.”
More than 650 linear feet of sewer/water lines will also be installed to serve this home and an additional four homes that YFT hopes to build in the future. The home will be built as a high-performance home, similar to those already being built by Stanley Martin Homes. The building team will use sustainable materials that are environmentally friendly/durable, as well as products that improve energy performance and require low maintenance. These building practices and applications will reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs, allowing the savings to support YFT’s valuable programs.
Construction of the home is expected to be completed in September and in time for YFT’s 30th Annual Country Fair and Auction on October 3, 2015.
Thanks to Builder Captain Stanley Martin Homes and to all of the following trade partners for your generosity and support of the Youth for Tomorrow project!

HomeAid and M/I Homes Offer Hope for Reunited Family
HomeAid, M/I Homes, and 18 trade partners completed work on the renovation of a condominium in Northern Virginia this week, giving new hope and a safe environment to a young mother and child who are survivors of domestic violence. The condo, owned by Homestretch, will also give the mother the level of security and stability she needs in order to bring a second child from China, the family’s home country. The mother and her second child were separated at birth four years ago. HSkitchen78_x300A sparkling new kitchen awaits a new family at a Homestretch property in Northern Virginia.
“Having stability is so critical to this family,” said Rachel Helferd, housing coordinator at Homestretch. “The mom is skilled and practiced in the field of accounting, but she hasn’t been able to focus on her career.”
“By being part of Homestretch’s program, and in our secure home,” Helferd added, “she’ll now be able to work with our employment counselor to secure full-time employment, increase her income, and get on the path to self-sufficiency. We’ll also be able to help her with any further educational goals and give her children access to our developmental and socialization programs for kids, including summer camp.”

staff demoMembers of M/I Homes’ Construction Department pitched in to demo a condo owned by Homestretch.

The $37,000 project included a kitchen renovation with new flooring, cabinets, appliances, granite countertop, sink, and lighting; new interior carpet throughout; an updated laundry room; a bathroom renovation featuring a new tub/shower, toilet, vanity, mirror, flooring, and plumbing and lighting fixtures; interior paint throughout; and updated electrical throughout the home.

“This project was an especially gratifying one for us,” said Eric Ferreira, vice president of construction for M/I Homes, “because we knew we would be helping a family so immediately. Our whole team got involved; instead of having our monthly production staff meeting at our office, we went to the condo instead and did all the demo ourselves. It was a great way for our team to take part in something so gratifying.”

Metro Tile and Metro Stone Works, both owned and operated by members of the same family, have partnered closely with M/I Homes for years and have worked on HomeAid projects several times. So when Eric Ferreira, vice president of construction for M/I Homes, asked for help in renovating a Northern Virginia condo owned by Homestretch, it was an easy decision.

“We told Eric that whatever he needed us to do, we’d do it,” said Nicholas Powers, president of Metro Stone Works. “We were in 100 percent, because we’re always ready to help M/I Homes help the cause.”

The companies supplied all of the granite countertops, for both the kitchen and the bathroom; sinks; and tile for the kitchen backsplash, shower surround and bathroom floor.

Metro Tile and Metro Stone Works, founded in 1986 and 2003, respectively, specialize in the installation of ceramic, porcelain, marble, and other hard-surface tiles, as well as the fabrication and installation of granite, marble, engineered quartz, and other solid-surface countertops.

Women Giving Back Sees Increase in Teen Volunteers
Women Giving Back (WGB) is used to changing lives, but it’s typically been the result of a stylish new suit for a woman about to go on a job interview, a backpack for a nervous new student, or hip new clothing for a child who isn’t used to going shopping in a retail setting. Over the past year, however, WGB volunteers have noticed a major uptick in the number of teens who are putting in service hours at The Store, as well as an increase in mother-son teams who are volunteering together at clothing drives and sorts.
“There’s been a big change in awareness,” WGB Founder Terri Stagi said, “and these kids are being groomed to make social responsibility part of who they are and what they’re committed to. And with our new partnership with Inova, we’re seeing teens coming out to help entertain kids while their moms are working with Inova staff. It’s been so inspiring to witness.”
Marjie Blassey, volunteer coordinator for WGB, added that she has also noticed more calls for service hours, particularly from teens.
“I recently was referred to a young man who needed to complete a lot of service hours,” she said, “and it was a challenge, particularly since he was already working. But he was genuine, and he made it clear that he wanted to work with us. His mother is a survivor of domestic violence, and he wanted to give back. He made clothing drive flyers, drove around picking up donations, conducted his own clothing drive, trained new volunteers who came in to work, and made a personal donation to help us shop for new clothing for our clients.”
“He earned his hours,” she added, “but even more importantly, he continues to come back. We have a better chance of stopping this cycle of violence if we can continue to work with boys like him.”

Connect a Teen; Change a Life

Do you know a teen who needs service hours, or who would like to help WGB? We have plenty of opportunities:

• Coordinate a clothing drive, especially for clothes for teen boys and girls.
• Sort clothing.
• Volunteer at The Store on a shopping day.

For more information, contact Marjie Blassey.
